Stem Cell Patches
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are special cells in your body that start out as a clean slate. They are what’s called undifferentiated cells, meaning they can become any cell in your body such as heart cells, lung cells, skin cells, blood cells, or any other type of cell that is needed. These cells are unique; in that they possess the capacity to divide and multiply by creating identical copies of themselves. This process is called self-renewal, and it allows stem cells to have a source of undifferentiated cells that may be used in the future. Healthy and active stem cells are a main part of how our body repairs itself.
As humans age, stem cells may mutate during the self-renewal process or go dormant. When they mutate, this is what causes DNA replication issues in the form of wrinkles, gray hair, body aches, and diseases. Many factors affect why mutations happen such as our genetic makeup, environmental factors, stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, and so on. Unhealthy, mutated stem cells circulating in our body is one of the main reasons we experience aging, discomfort, and disease.
When stem cells go dormant, also known as quiescence, they do so in order to conserve energy and vital resources, which protects their future ability to self-renew. They can be reactivated when needed, however as we age this becomes a more difficult task. Stem cells don’t disappear with age, but their dormancy and reduced activity causes a very noticeable decline in their ability to regenerate tissues, which, in turn, is felt in the aging process.
Having an abundance of active, healthy stem cells is key to aging well. It is said that by the age of 20 we possess the greatest amount of active, healthy stem cells, and that by the age of 30 their activity declines by about half. The activity of these healthy stem cells exponentially declines with age, and it is estimated that between the ages of 60 and 80 healthy stem cell activity and self-renewal declines by 90-95%.
